New to Medicare?
Start with the four parts.
Medicare is the federal health program for people 65 and older, and for some younger people with disabilities. It comes in four parts. Here is what each one does.
Part A
Hospital coverage
Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay no premium for Part A.
Part B
Medical coverage
Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium.
Part C
Medicare Advantage
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private carriers. Often bundles Parts A, B, and D, plus extras.
Part D
Prescription drugs
Coverage for prescription medications. Sold as a standalone plan or built into most Medicare Advantage plans.
The big decision
Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement.
Most people choose one path or the other. Here is how they compare so you can see which fits your doctors, your budget, and how you like to get care.
Medicare AdvantagePart C
- How it works
- A private plan that replaces Original Medicare and bundles your coverage into one plan.
- Doctor networks
- Usually a network (HMO or PPO). Care is lowest cost when you stay in network.
- Monthly premium
- Often a low or $0 plan premium, plus your Part B premium.
- Out-of-pocket costs
- Copays and coinsurance as you use care, up to a yearly maximum.
- Prescription drugs
- Usually built in (Part D included).
- Extras
- May include dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits.
- Who it tends to fit
- People who want low monthly cost and bundled extras, and are comfortable with a network.
Medicare SupplementMedigap
- How it works
- Works alongside Original Medicare and helps pay the costs Medicare leaves to you.
- Doctor networks
- See any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. No networks.
- Monthly premium
- A higher monthly premium, plus your Part B premium.
- Out-of-pocket costs
- Very predictable. Most covered costs are paid for you after the plan kicks in.
- Prescription drugs
- Bought separately as a standalone Part D plan.
- Extras
- Medical coverage only. Add dental or vision separately if you want it.
- Who it tends to fit
- People who want maximum freedom of doctors and the most predictable costs.
There is no single best choice. The right plan depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. A licensed Plansure broker walks you through both, side by side.
Timing matters
When can you enroll?
Medicare has specific enrollment windows. Missing one can mean a penalty or a gap in coverage. Here are the three that matter most.
- IEP
Turning 65
7-month window
Your Initial Enrollment Period runs the 3 months before your 65th birthday month, your birthday month, and the 3 months after. This is when most people first sign up.
- AEP
Annual Enrollment
Oct 15 - Dec 7
Every fall, anyone on Medicare can switch, join, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Changes take effect January 1. A good time to review your coverage.
- SEP
Special situations
Triggered by life events
Moving, losing employer coverage, retiring after 65, or other qualifying events can open a Special Enrollment Period outside the usual windows. We help you check if you qualify.
Not sure which window applies to you? A licensed broker will tell you in one short call.

Questions
Common Medicare questions.
Most people sign up during their Initial Enrollment Period, the 7-month window around their 65th birthday. If you are still working with employer coverage, you may be able to delay. A broker can confirm the right timing for you.
Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one private plan that replaces Original Medicare and usually uses a network. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare, lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare, and makes your costs more predictable. We compare both with you side by side.
It depends on the plan. Advantage plans use networks, so we check that your doctors are in network. For prescriptions, we check each plan's drug list against your medications. This is exactly the kind of detail a broker checks for you before you enroll.
Most people pay no premium for Part A. Part B has a standard monthly premium set by Medicare. Advantage and Supplement plans add their own premiums and cost-sharing, which vary by plan and location. A broker can walk through the real numbers for your area.
If you have qualifying employer coverage, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty and enroll later through a Special Enrollment Period. The rules depend on your employer size and plan. We help you check before any deadlines pass.
No. Our guidance is free to you. Brokers are paid by the insurance carrier, and that pay does not change your plan price. You get help comparing plans at no cost and no obligation.
